The Wreckage of My Presence: Essays

I first saw Casey Wilson on the sitcom “Happy Endings” and have been a fan of hers ever since. Her over the top style of comedy always makes me laugh so when I heard she was publishing a book of essays, I immediately ordered it for my library.  This book lived up to my expectations and even surprised me with poignant and emotional moments I didn’t expect.  This was a wonderful collection of essays that made me laugh and cry.

Casey Wilson has a gift that few people have, which is the ability to make you laugh one minute and cry the next.  Several of her essays started out with a humorous story or anecdote and ended up being about a serious topic.  But ultimately, this book is about the humorous way Wilson views the world and how she uses her humor to get though life’s struggles. This isn’t a memoir, but the reader learns a lot about her life through the essays about being a “bed person,” her obsession with Afrin, and how she landed the role of Penny in “Happy Endings” among the many stories she shares. After reading about her parents and her childhood, it’s not surprising to see where she gets her sense of humor from. While I highly recommend this book and encourage you to read it no matter the format, I believe the best way to fully enjoy this book is to listen to the audio version. Wilson herself reads it and she is an absolute delight. She makes the funny parts funnier, and you can hear the emotion in her voice when she talks about losing her mother at a young age or her own struggles with motherhood.  Even when she is talking about topics I have LITERALLY (said in my best Penny Hartz voice) no interest in like the Real Housewives franchise, she kept me entertained and that to me is the sign of a good storyteller.

I really enjoyed this look into Casey Wilson’s life and would read another book of hers in a heartbeat. Her essays are entertaining, touching, and hilarious and I found myself smiling the entire time I was listening. This was a treat and a great read.  I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
